For the first time in league history, the Charlotte Roller Girls visited the Sunshine State. On Saturday, Charlotte’s All-Stars took on the Jacksonville Roller Girls in a physical bout that went down to the wire. But in the end, it was Jacksonville edging out Charlotte to take the 90-73 victory.
Rosemary Gardner a.k.a. Rosie Cheeks grabbed lead jammer and two points in the first jam to give Charlotte the early lead. Pam Brown a.k.a. Pamela Ander-Slam extended that lead a few jams later. Jacksonville responded and pulled ahead midway through the first period.
Behind but not beaten, Charlotte rotated jammers Gardner, Brown and Linda Sewell a.k.a. BoToxic Bruz’her. The trio jammed for 20 of the 21 jams in the first period. Their steady barrage kept Charlotte in the game.
A surge by Jacksonville in the closing minutes of the period gave them a 45-29 lead at the half.
In the second half, Charlotte’s All-Stars came out strong. In the first five jams, its blockers kept Jacksonville scoreless while its jammers scored 14 points. As the action intensified, Jacksonville answered by outscoring Charlotte 21-2 in the next six jams.
Charlotte added Samantha Labarbera a.k.a. Drew FearMEmore and Erin Barbee a.k.a. Foxy Pound to its jammer rotation. Barbee scored 18 points in her first two jams but her efforts were not enough to overcome the might of Jacksonville who took the 90-73 victory
The next bout for the Charlotte Roller Girls is on November 8 when its B Dazzlers heads to Bluefield, West Virginia to face the Green Valley Jaded Misfits.
