After a confusing last jam and an hour long referee review, complete with video replay, the Charlotte Roller Girls were declared the winner of Saturday’s bout over the Cape Fear Roller Girls with a final score of 93-92. Both times these two teams have met, the bouts have been decided by one point. Cape Fear won the first meeting in 2008.
Charlotte sent its premier team, the All-Stars, which was headed by captains Haley Blaska a.k.a. Amy Fister and Rosemary Gardner a.k.a. Rosie Cheeks. Strong performances by Samantha Labarbera a.k.a. Drew FearMEmore, who among other things scored 13 points in a single jam, and Emily Kupprion a.k.a. Puncher P. Hole, whose blocking skills kept Cape Fear’s jammers at bay, contributed to Charlotte’s victory.
“We won because we played smart and as a team,” said Blaska. “Our skaters put in a lot of preparation for these bouts and it showed. All our hard work paid off.”
The final Charlotte Roller Girls home bout of the 2009 season is on December 6 at the Grady Cole Center. All your favorite Charlotte Roller Girls will battle head to head. The nearly 40 players in the league will be split into two teams based upon age. Those aged 34 and under will make up the Kittens while those 35 and older will be the Cougars.
