The first game whistle will be blasted from Alan Holmes of the local non-profit, Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN). Part of our game proceeds in 2013 are dedicated to support our neighbors-in-need who are living with HIV/AIDS through RAIN.

Also at the May 18 double header:

• All fans present will be invited to participate in a National Anthem sing-a-long with one lucky child selected from the audience to stand on the track to get it started.
• The Clown’s Circus Sideshow will amaze and entertain fans of all ages at half time.
• Fans will be invited to bid on hand-painted plaster molds of skaters for the ‘Hawaii or BUST’ fundraiser. The fundraiser will help CLTRG send their All-Stars to Hawaii to play Pacific Roller Derby in August.

In the much-anticipated Charlotte Roller Girls season opener, the All-Stars defeated their rival Cape Fear Roller Girls in front of a sold-out crowd. The All-Stars have been training relentlessly to prepare for the introduction of the new WFTDA rule set… and the hard work paid off! Both teams fought hard for points as the advantage went back and forth in a captivating neck-and-neck game that showed the true athleticism of the sport. The All-Stars ended up taking home the victory.

The tension and excitement were building in the jam-packed Grady Cole Center as radio DJ Jay Sparxx from KISS blew the ceremonial first whistle. Do U Juana took the lead as the first jammer to hit the track, getting Charlotte the advantage right off the bat. Hitsteria capitalized on a power jam early in the game that lead to a 13-point lead, until the All-Stars started filling the box, and Cape Fear took the lead. This nail biter kept the crowd on the edge of their seats as the point spread stayed tight. But Thor Loser was able to blast through the pack to even out the game, and Rosie Cheeks got the lead to bring Charlotte back ahead. The new rules and elimination of minor penalties lead to a new type of game-play, with many power jams on both sides and Charlotte bringing back the pivot line start. Charlotte was in the lead at the half with a score of 85 – 74.

Charlotte lost their lead during a power jam for Cape Fear 4 minutes into the second half. The crowd was getting emotional as jammers swapped in and out of the penalty box, giving power to the opposing teams. Cape Fear held on to their lead for the next 10 minutes of play. The Charlotte Roller Girls rallied and fought hard against their opponent, utilizing new strategies such as jammer-on-jammer defense. Rosie Cheeks took a bad fall that stopped the jam, for what appeared to be an ankle injury, but was able to get up. The crowd roared with applause for the league veteran. The All-Stars’ attention to detail had them creeping up points until they were able to “eat the baby” and allow Hitsteria to take Charlotte back to lead 130 – 128.

The Charlotte Roller Girls continued to play strategically with a thorough knowledge of the rules that led to repeated power jams. Lyk’r C’leen ate up the points and the score climbed in Charlotte’s favor to 143 – 176. After hard-blows and major pile ups, Charlotte hung onto their lead to finish the game. They went into the last jam with only two blockers from each team on the track, but ended the game with a final score of 185 – 157.

The All-Stars rack up their 2nd win of the season and hope their next bout in New Orleans against the Big Easy Roller Girls on April 20 will be another addition to their undefeated season. Be sure to follow all of the action on Facebook and Twitter.

Hawaii or BUST!

The Charlotte Roller Girls have begun fundraising for the All-Stars trip to play Pacific Roller Derby in Honolulu, HI this summer. At the April 6 game, fans will have a chance to see a preview of the plaster artwork busts that players from both the B-Dazzlers and All-Stars have created themselves. Fans can bid on the busts at the double header on May 18.

The girls performed knee slides and skating tricks along the parade route. Addie Finitum busted out her handstands and cartwheels. Total Lizaster barely survived a couple of hills while shooting the duck and Rita Maneata and AmberTheGreat jumped over ref Frag Doll.

Charlotte has traded wins with Cape Fear since the inception of both leagues. They last met on the track at the “You’ve Got to Be NC” Derby Expo in May 2012 which was a loss for Charlotte. But the All-Stars are geared up and ready to go toe-to-toe on the track again with new players and under a new rule set.

The first home bout of the season will be jam-packed with hard-hitting action and fun for the whole family. Kira Williams, a talented singing star at just seven years of age, will be performing the national anthem to kick off the evening. DJ Jay Sparxx from KISS 95.1 will be a guest emcee at the bout and will provide halftime entertainment. Refreshments are available for purchase from our sponsors, Mellow Mushroom and Pabst Blue Ribbon. CLTRG merch will also be available including a limited edition season schedule tee designed by comic book artist Andy Smith for just 8 dollars!

Tickets are still available but act quickly before they sell out! Want the most bang for your buck? Snag a season pass up until the morning of 3/23 and get access to 10 games for the price of 6 as well as VIP seating and a fan pack with tees and other CLTRG swag. A portion of our bout proceeds will benefit the Charlotte community and our charity partner, the Regional AIDS Interfaith Network (RAIN) including the annual AIDS walk. Fans also have a chance to win free tickets daily during the week before the bout during the “Hot 7 at 7” on KISS 95.1.

Last year, more than 80,000 spectators joined the party and watched the Charlotte Roller Girls skate through the heart of the Queen City with the parade procession as pipes sounded in the background.

This year’s parade will step off at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 16 at Tryon and 9th street in uptown Charlotte. In order to accommodate the growing audience for the parade, the parade route has expanded this year. The parade will still start at Tryon & 9th St. It then march south to 3rd Street where it takes a left and marches down 3rd St. to Caldwell.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a non-profit event, open to the public. We hope to see you there in your finest green threads!
